Boy Scout Computer Science Saturday

Upsilon Pi Epsilon will be hosting our annual Computer Science Saturday on January 16, 2010. More information including permission slips can be found at CSS 2010. We have not yet procured funding for the event. Cale Colony will be setting up a group on Google Groups to coordinate the event. E-mail him to be added to the group.

Crosslisted Courses

UPE will accept members if they meet the requirements to join even if they have some courses that are not explicitly listed as CIS courses on the applicant's transcript. To count towards the minimum requirements, a course must be either listed as a CIS course or crosslisted as a CIS course.

Recruitment Opportunities

Cale Colony proposed that we try to recruit applicants to UPE that are either one semester away from having enough credit-hours or are slightly below the minimum grade point average for eligibility. To encourage prospective applicants to consider joining UPE, Cale also suggested that we tie our recruitment events to volunteer efforts, such as Habitat for Humanity. This could be a better way of getting attention and turnout than simply asking prospective members to attend one of our meetings.

Spyware Removal Drive

Jeremy White suggested that UPE hold a Spyware Removal Drive, where UPE members volunteer to remove spyware, viruses, and adware from students' personal computers.

Steve Briley brought up a point that typically scanning for spyware can take upwards of 30 minutes and that it may be difficult for students to wait that long. To help alleviate this, Brandon Holbert suggested that we create and print pamphlets about safe computing practices and links to resources that we can hand out at the event for students to use when they have time.

In addition to sending out a mass e-mail to the student body, it is likely that we would hold this event in the University Center to attract the most number of students. We will also be accepting donations during the event.

Break Technology Day

Tired of PC LOAD LETTER errors? Take out your frustration with technology using a hammer as we destroy the electronics that drive us mad. Date, location, and legality to be determined.

Spoons are Simply Unacceptable

Knifes are only marginally better. Cale Colony volunteered to purchase plastic forks for future UPE meetings.

Spicy Food Challenge

Kasey Thompson reminded us that there will be a Spicy Food Challenge on November 24, 2009 from 1:00pm-4:00pm in Kochoff Hall. Up to 2 members from each organization can compete.

Lab Proctoring

We are considering proctoring one of the labs in the CIS building on Wednesday nights from 6:00pm-8:00pm to raise funds.

Employment Opportunity

Contact Cale about an employment opportunity occurring the week after Christmas.

Presentations about Computer Science

As discussed at our last meeting, we plan to hold student-led seminars some time during this semester. These presentations will be open to the student body and will cover different areas in computer science. Cale Colony suggested a lesson on FPGAs and the possibilty of inviting professors from different departments. Jeremy White suggested a series of wireless networking workshops that we can advertise to different levels of students; for example, one seminar on practical networking topics (setting up equipment, basic configuration, the meaning behind channels) and another on security issues (levels of encryption and possibly a WEP cracking demonstration).

UM-D Knowledge Portal

Jeremy White proposed that members of UPE create a searchable, extensible online system for transferring the knowledge of upperclassmen to the rest of students on our campus. The website would feature: reviews of professors, extra information about classes, and a book swap program. A committee will meet next Wednesday, September 23 at 5:30pm-6:30pm in room 121 of the CIS building to discuss the technical details of the system. The meeting will be open for anyone to attend.

Getting Together with other Student Organizations

In an effort to expose UPE to a wider audience, we will look into collaberating with other organizations on campus. Informally, we have also been invited to events being held next week by the Society of Women Engineers (laser tag, dinner) and Theta Tau (LAN party).

Other Event Ideas

Cale Colony suggested a Poker and Cigar Night with prizes to the winners. Jason Kleidouhakis is willing to add UPE events to the DCE Google calendar for engineering events / UM-D events.

Urban Spelunking Gear

Order forms for tactical gear (gloves, respirators, etc.) will be available in the UPE office, room 116 of the CIS building. Prospective members: if you do not have proper gear, you cannot head out. Remember our safety motto: "no matter your skill, asbestos can kill."

Showcasing Student Developed Games

In addition to the High School Gaming Day that UPE has had in the past, we are considering plans to team up with ACM to showcase student developed games at the next ACM Video Gaming Day in Kochoff Hall in the University Center.

Windows 7 Launch Party

Windows 7 will be released on October 22. We have tentative plans to hold a launch party either off campus or possibly at the Gabriel Richard Center on campus. More details will follow at a later meeting.

Ideas for Fall Semester Events

Jeremy White suggested that UPE offer a weekly series of student-led lectures in various topics of Computer Science. Dr. Maxim advised that we limit this to a bi-weekly or tri-weekly recurring event. The first proposed lecture would be held near the beginning of October.

Another idea suggested was bringing in outside speakers from industry to give talks. UPE has hosted speakers in the past, and found that a rate of one per month worked well.

Spring Picnic

The annual UPE / ACM spring picnic is scheduled for Saturday, May 16th.

Senior Design Competition

The Senior Design Competition will be held April 24th from 8:00am - 3:00p in room 1420 Professional Education Center. There are approximately 6-9 teams competing.

Senior Design Showcase

The Senior Design Showcase will be held April 27th from 4:00pm - 8:00pm in the upper floor of the CIS building.

President Position Available

Steve Briley will be stepping down as President of UPE, so we need to elect his replacement. Cale Colony has volunteered to run. If you wish to run against him, please contact .

UPE will have a table at the picnic (also in the IAVS) that needs to be manned from 2:00-4:00pm. Free food will be available.

Constitution Clarification

The UM-D UPE chapter has been practicing a requirement that candidates must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA in CIS courses to be accepted. This requirement is neither in the national constitution, nor in our local one. A vote was held to stop the practice of this requirement, which a majority of the members present voted for. The requirement will no longer be practiced.

C.A.T.S. Girlscout Event - March 21st, 2009 (Saturday)

Engineering/Computer Science Experience - March 28th, 2008 (Saturday)

  • UPE is doing the High School Web Design Competition part of that day's events.
  • Will need proctors for CIS 117 & CIS 239 for the event. To keep an eye on the contestants.
  • Also we need to come up with themes for the competition, and submit them to Professor Maxim. It is assumed that one theme will then be chosen by Professor Maxim and presented the day of the event.

Finances:

  • Money Making Opportunities for UPE:
    • Room Proctoring:
      • Currently, the CIS rooms are being fully proctored. Louis McHugh (the CIS Systems Administrator) didn't check with UPE to see about proctoring any of the rooms (not that he has to do that, it just would have given us an opportunity), compounded with the fact that we didn't know how many UPE members were even going to be immediately available for meetings or anything else. Many of our UPE members have graduated. I.E. No proctoring funds this semester.
      • Steve Briley has talked with Louis McHugh to try and get proctoring setup for the winter semester. But, whether or not there will be any proctoring positions available when the winter semester gets here is another matter. We'll have to wait and see. It's just a timing thing.
    • Tutoring:
      • Apparently it's now difficult to find someone willing to pay UPE for providing tutoring services. Steve Briley is still looking into it with Professor Grosky. At this point, the only classes that are supposedly eligible for tutoring is CIS 275 & 285, due to departments doing something along of lines of weekly recitation (review) of what is/was being covered.
    • Funds from Winter 2008 G.A.M.E. Lab proctoring:
      • The excel spreadsheet for the hours we spent providing proctoring services for the G.A.M.E. Lab during the Winter 2008 semester, either were never turned in for payment/reimbursement, or were lost. Steve Briley has submitted them to the CIS department for payment to UPE. We are waiting to see the outcome of that.

Gathering Event Ideas:

  • Bowling
  • Game Night
  • Hotdog Eating Competition???

Recruitment:

  • Please see UPE's "Join UPE!" page for the flyers to pass out to students, and for the room visitation form.
